This Tuesday, MTB group Danity Kane released "Welcome to the Dollhouse", the follow up to their platinum freshman album. Diddy put together a team of producers - Bryan Cox, Danja, Seven Aurelius - and gave them and DK 5 weeks to make this album.
What I like about DK is that they all sing lead on the tracks. Usually in a girl group (SWV, Destiny's Child in the beginning, Pussycat Dolls, etc) one voice is clearly set front and center, and most of the singles will be tracks where that voice is in the lead. This cannot be said about DK - from the lead club-banging track "Damaged" to the (slightly overblown) pop ballad "Poetry", you hear all the girls' voices on just about every track.
Dawn stands out the most, and her husky voice is a nice complement to the blending of the others. "Bad Girl" featuring Missy Elliot has a crazy beat and some nice harmonies - definetly another club track. "Ectasy" should have been a stand out, as Dawn is killin it, but the addition of Rick Ross at the beginning makes you want to skip to the next track. Not that I don't like Rick Ross, but it just does not gell and sounds like two different songs (I have made myself a copy of the track without Rick).
No, they are not En Vogue, or Brownstone, and they don't have a Beyonce, but DK's "Welcome To The Dollhouse" is am improvement over their first album and definitely worth checking out. They definitely fill a position that is not being filled in popular music right now.
